Announcements for Ms. Fish's Class
6th grade has an upcoming field trip the the Facets movie theater. We will be seeing films about STEM and climate change, which connects to our current science unit. The trip is on April 3rd and costs $9. Permission slips are due on Thursday, March 28th.
Math
Current Unit of Study: Decimal Ops
Students are brainstorming ideas for ways to solve decimal problems. They are applying these ideas with the four operations, and ensuring that their strategies work in all situations. They are also connecting their decimal problem-solving to fractional problem solving methods. The unit test for Decimal Ops will be given during the final week of the quarter, the week of April 1st.
Join Ms. Fish's Khan Academy class for 2018-2019 using the following code: XWQ7NSAF
Homework Policy:
Homework from our curriculum, Connected Math, will be assigned weekly. Students will be expected to do around 15-20 problems each week to supplement their classroom learning. Homework will generally be assigned on Mondays and collected on Fridays.
Khan Academy Policy:
Students should use Khan Academy at home or during free time in the classroom to enhance their math learning. Khan Academy can be especially helpful for students who are below grade level and need review, and students who want more challenging work to help them get ready for NWEA. Every two weeks, all students who spend more than 120 minutes on Khan Academy doing appropriate activities (videos, non-math topics, and "too easy" math activities such as first grade math do NOT count) will get to choose a prize from Ms. Fish's prize bin.

Math Grading Policy
- Assessments: 60%. These include unit tests, IB GRASPS tasks, major quizzes, and projects. Kids can expect one or two large assessments, four to five quizzes, and three timed test grades per quarter.
- Assignments: 40% Assignments include evidence of participation (notebooks), homework, class assignments, centers, study guides, and reflection activities.
Science
Current Unit: Climate Change and Melting Polar Ice
We are currently using a CPS-approved science curriculum called Amplify Science. You can log on to Amplify at home using the website my.amplify.com and logging in with the Clever web server button. Students use their CPS email and password to log in from the Clever landing page.
The unit test for the Climate Change unit will be computer-based, and we will likely take this test the week of April 1st. Before Spring Break, students will also be working on designing a lab to test the question, "Does melting sea ice or melting land ice create more sea level rise?"
I generally do not assign science homework unless there is an activity that needs to be completed outside of school; students may expect to complete almost all of our science work in class. Science tests and quizzes will be given regularly (with quizzes about twice a month), and students will have advance notice of all major assessments.
